Erster Dezember

In diesem Jahr habe ich eine wunderschöne Kinderbuchreihe entdeckt, die auch ein Weihnachtsbuch enthält, die Kuh Lieselotte. In diesem Buch gibt es unter anderem eine Sammlung verschiedenster Adventskalender. Einer davon scheint wie für mich gemacht zu sein. Man hängt jeden Tag im Dezember einen Stern an Tannenzweige. Auf diese Weise erhält man Stück für Stück einen Weihnachtsstrauß. Meine Variante dieses Kalenders enthält natürlich 24 verschiedene Origamisterne.
Den Anfang macht der Kalamistern, den ich schon einmal für einen Adventskalender verwendet habe. Man findet den Stern immer wieder im Internet, abere immer nur in der ersten Variante. Mein Liebling ist dieser hier und hier geht's zur Anleitung.

This year I discovered a beautiful series of childrens books about the cow Lieselotte, which also contains a christmas book. In this book there is a collection of different advent calendars. One of them is quite perfect for me. Every day in December you put a star on twigs of evergreen. This way you have a beautiful christmas bouquet by Christmas Eve. My version is made of 24 different Origami stars - of course.
I'm starting with the Kalami star, which I already used for a differnt kind of Advent calendar a few years ago. You can find many of those in the internet but always one variation. My favourite version is this one and here you can find the diagram.

Endspurt - Final Sprint

Ende Juli diesen Jahres rief der Verein Origami USA dazu auf, Elefanten zu falten. Grund dafür ist eine Kooperation mit der Organisation Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS). Gemeinsam will man den Weltrekord der größten Sammlung an Elefanten (nicht lebende) brechen und 35.000 Origami Elefanten zusammentragen. Die enorm hohe Zahl steht dabei für die Menge an Tieren, die pro Jahr getötet werden, um an das Elfenbein zu gelangen.

Jeder kann gerne mitmachen und bis zum 16 September gefaltete Elefanten an folgende Adresse schicken:

Dabei ist es egal was für einen Elefanten ihr macht, Hauptsache, er ist als solcher zu erkennen.

Von Origami USA gibt es gleich drei Anleitungen, die man gern verwenden kann. Darüber hinaus wurden viele bekannte Origamisten in ihrer Kreativität beflügelt und haben ebenfalls Anleitungen erstellt. Dazu gehört Evan Zodl mit einem Video zu einem Elefanten von Rui Roda und Leyla Torres mit einem eigenen Modell.

Also, legt Euch noch einmal ins Zeug, denn die letzte Bilanz vom 25. August war noch nicht zufriedenstellend:

Inspiration

Wenn ich modulares Origami entwerfe, dann reicht mir oft eine kleine Faltsequenz aus, die mir so sehr gefällt, dass ich sie in einer Kugel integrieren möchte. Besonders haben es mir dabei Formen angetan, die rund und geschwungen sind. Auf diese Weise kann man viel besser florale und natürliche Strukturen nachempfinden.

Während der Origami Convention, dieses Jahr in Erkner, begegnete mir solch eine Faltung. Versteckt ist sie in einer niedlichen kleinen Meise, die ich im Workshop von Sébastien Limet lernte. Bereits als Sébastien sagte, wir dürfen bei dem Modell nicht alle Falten durchziehen, wurde ich hellhörig. Das bedeutet, man faltet bis zu einem bestimmten Punkt und der übrige Teil des Papiers wird nur gebogen. Bei der Meise entsteht auf diese Art der obere Teil des Kopfes.

Hat man eine solche Faltsequenz, beginnt der schwierige Teil. Man muss das übrige Papier dazu verwenden, eine Tasche und Lasche zu falten, um die einzelnen Module miteinander zu verbinden. Weil ich die Faltung nicht vergessen wollte, habe ich schon während des Workshops angefangen, daran herumzutüfteln. Manchmal, ganz selten, greift aber einfach eins ins andere und am Ende unseres Lehrgangs hatte ich nicht nur das fertige Vögelchen in der Hand, sondern auch drei miteinander verbundene Module. Den Rest des Tages faltete ich dann fleißig Module und kurz vor Mitternacht war der Prototyp dann tatsächlich schon fertig. 

Ich der darauffolgenden Woche habe ich noch eine weitere Variante des Modells gefaltet. Danach war erstmal Ruhe, aber ich kann schon so viel verraten, ich bin wieder dran und habe eine weitere Idee, an der ich gerade falte.

When I'm designing modular Origami, sometimes it is enough to have a short folding sequence, that I'd like to include in a globe. Especially round shapes gain my interest. With these shapes you can imitate natural and floral structures much better.

During this years Origami Convention in Erkner, I found such a perfect fold. Hidden in a cute little tit, that I learned in a workshop by Sébastien Limet. Already at the beginning, when Sébastien said, some of the folds needn't to be folded through, he got my attention. This means, you fold the paper just to a special point and the rest of it is just bent. For the tit it is the upper part of the head.

Have you found such a folding sequence, the hard part is about to begin. You have to use the rest of the paper to form a pocket and a flap, to join the units with each other. Because I didn't want to forget the folds, I already started to experiment on it during the workshop. Sometimes, really seldom, one leads to the other and at the End of the lesson I was not only holding a little bird in my hand, but also three connected units.The rest of the day I folded modules and just before midnight the prototype was finished.

In the upcoming week I also folded a variation of the model. After this, it went quiet about it, but I can tell you, I had a new idea and these days, I'm working on it.

50 Jahre Star Trek

In der kommenden Woche komme ich gleich zweifach an ein kleines Ziel. Für mich persönlich und vor allem viele Kinder, Jugendliche und Lehrer ist es der Beginn der Sommerferien - es wird echt Zeit!
Für Star Trek Fans auf der ganzen Welt ist es der Filmstart des 13. Kinofilms des großen Science Fiction Universums, das vor 50 Jahren von Gene Roddenberry erdacht wurde.

Bereits im Februar hatte ich ein kleines Enterprisemodell designed, für das ich mir fest vorgenommen habe, eine Anleitung pünktlich zur Filmpremiere zu veröffentlichen. In Bezug auf das gezeichnete Diagramm klappte das auch gut, denn ich habe dieses bereits für den Tagungsband der diesjährigen Origamiconvention in Erkner/Brandenburg erstellt. Nur habe ich ja seit einiger Zeit begonnen, auch Videos zu erstellen, um die Verständlichkeit meiner Anleitungen zu erhöhen. Tja und das hat dann doch noch eine Weile gedauert.
Schlußendlich bin ich nun fertig, die Datei speichert sich gerade ab und ich bin doch ein wenig müde. Daher kommt das Ergebnis heut ohne viele Worte zu Euch.

In the upcoming week there are two little objectives for me to reach. To me personally and to many other kids, teenagers and teachers it is the beginning of the summer holidays - finally!

To Star Trek fans all over the world it is the release of the 13th movie of the great science fiction universe, created by Gene Roddenberry.

Already in February I designed a small enterprise model, which I wanted to present with a diagram in this time of the year, to celebrate the new movie. The drawn instruction was finished in time, as I published it in this years German Origami conventionbook. But there was something else to do, as I started to do videos for my models too. Well, and this took me some time.

Finally it is finished, the file is saved and I am really tired now.

Nach der Convention ++ Update: 28.07.16 ++

So allmählich kehre ich zum Alltag zurück. Doch es fällt noch schwer, sich von all den schönen Eindrücken während der Origami Convention und den Tagen danach zu trennen. Dennoch möchte ich noch etwas mehr darüber berichten
Da ich noch immer einen großen Teil Schlaf nachholen muss und weil ich mich auch wieder anderen wichtigen Dingen widmen muss, wird auch dies ein Blogeintrag, der stetig wächst. Es soll dabei um alles Mögliche gehen, wovon ich am Wochenende noch nicht berichtet habe.  Es ist letztendlich eine kleine Sammlung der wunderbaren gefalteten Geschenke geworden, die ich während des Wochenendes bekommen habe.

Slowly I am coming back to everyday life. But it is still very hard to let go of all those beautiful memories of the recent Origami Convention and the days after. Nevertheless I want to write a bit more about it.

As I still have to catch up some hours of sleep and as I am again forced to do some other important stuff, this will be another growing blogentry. I will write about several different things, I missed to show to you during the weekend. It turned out to be a report about all the beautiful folded presents, I got during the weekend.

Den Anfang macht eine wunderbare Maske, entworfen und gefaltet von mitanei (Daniel Chang). Er hat uns alle mit unglaublich tollen menschlichen Gesichtern begeistert, die er aus verschiedenen Papierarten gefaltet hat. Derart beeinflusst fragte ich ihn, ob er auch eine Maske des berühmten blinden Comic-Heldens Mathew Murdock gestalten kann. Nur wenige Stunden später präsentierte er mir dieses beeindruckenden Modell und machte es mir sogar zum Geschenk.
Auf diesem Weg noch einmal ein dickes Dankeschön! Ich habe mich riesig gefreut.

At first I want to show you this beautiful mask, designed and folded by mitanei (Daniel Chang). He impressed us all with unbelivable astonishing human faces, folded out of different types of paper. Influenced by this I asked him if he could make a mask of the famous comic hero Mathew Murdock as well. Only several hours later he presented to me this great mask and even gave it to me as a present.

On this way I also want to say thank you so much! I am so happy about it.

Das nächste Geschenk, das ich Euch zeigen möchte, ist von Beth Johnson. Sie war eine der drei Ehrengäste auf dem Treffen. Ich war die Glückliche, die sie vom Flughafen abholen durfte und nach der Convention war sie noch für zwei Tage bei mir zu Gast. Wir hatten jede Menge Spaß, gemeinsam mit der Potsdamer Origamigruppe Teile von Potsdam und Berlin zu erkunden.
Als wir am Mittwoch auf wiedersehen sagen musste, stellte sie heimlich zwei Exemplare ihrer wunderschönen tessellierten Fische auf meinen Schreibtisch.

The next present I want to show you I got from Beth Johnson. She was one of the three specialguests at the convention. I was the lucky one to pick her up at the airport and after the weekend she was my guest for two days. We had fun exploring some parts of Potsdam and Berlin together with the Potsdam Origami Group.

When we had to say goodbye on Wednesday, she secretly put two of her beautiful tessellated fish on my desk.

Hier kommt nun endlich das letzte Update. Es kostete mich einiges an Zeit, dieses letzte Bild hochzuladen, da ich immer wieder sehr unzufrieden mit dem Foto war. Nun ist es aber vollbracht und Ihr könnt Euch den Dachs von Sébastien Limet ansehen. Es ist ein relativ einfaches Modell, dass wir auch während der Convention gefaltet haben, aber mein Ergebnis ist bei Weitem nicht so gut.
Da bin ich dann gleich doppelt froh, dass ich den süßen Kerl vom Designer selbst bekommen habe.

Finally here comes the lasr update. It took me some time to upload this image, as I was unsatisfied with the photo on and on again. Now that it's done, I present you a badger by Sébastien Limet. The modell is not that difficult to fold and we also folded it during the Convention. But mine by far isn't as good as his. So I am twice as lucky having this cute little guy folded by the designer himself.

Origami Deutschland 2016

This will be an experiment. This years Origami Convention in Germany I want to inform you about it live. So it won't be a usual blog post, but more like a news flash. I am writing in English right now and translate it later. This is how you can get in the mood of a convention, where there are people from so many countries.
And here comes the first picture. We are waiting in the lobby right now, shortly before the registration will start.

At about two o clock the registration started. Everyone received a beautiful welcome package and afterwards, the folders set up their exhibitions.

Right now the opening ceremony is taking place. The special guests are presented, Beth Johnson, Sébastian Limet and Dirk Eisner. We learn that there are about 230 people joining this years convention. Everyone is excited, a glass of prosecco is standing right in front of me, we are ready to start!

To show everyone the models that are published in the convention book we are setting up a table with all the folded results. Some of them are folded by the Potsdam Origami Group, some of them were brought or sent by the designers to us.

 A short nap of 5 hours, nice breakfast and some repacking.
Now I'm sitting in great hall again, slowly people are coming back from their rooms. A long day with many interesting events lies ahaed of us.

10:40 a.m.
Two workshops done. The first one was tought by Anna Kastlunger. It was a minimalistic cow with colour change.

Afterwards I did my first own workshop. It was the minimalistic Enterprise D and even though there were only three participants, it was a fun to do. Everyone succeeded and happily flew away afterwards.

How time flies, when you have fun. Several hours later, I attended another workshop, had a beautiful idea for a new piece of modular origami. We took a group picture, I took a nap. We ate dinner and counted all the ballots of our fairytail competition.
Now we are waiting for the evening programm to start.

Number two, had two winners. One was the Origami version of "die Schneekönigin" (the snow Queen). The other one was this castle with 12 hidden fairytales.

 

Finally the best entry for the competition was the paper interpretation of 13 fairytales by Lisa - have a look how happy she is.

 

Before the announcement of the winner and afterwards we enjoyed a short concert of musicians playing the Shamisen.

It seemed to quite inspiring to Gerwin, who folded his own version immediately.

The convention is slowly reaching its end. I already had to check out of my room, but some workshops are still running.

It seems as if I am stuck to cute creatures this year as I made a little puffin in the morning. Again a model by Sébastien Limet.

 Afterwards I did my next own workshop, the shamrock. Everyone succeeded, again, and we even made a selfie - even though thy picture is quite blurry.

Almost all of the exhibition items are put away. Every now and then people are saying good bye. The convention is definitely coming to an end.

Hanami

Kennt Ihr das, dass man sich in einer Sache so richtig verbeißt? Mir ging es so im Februar. Endgültig keine Lust mehr auf Winter beschloss ich mich an ein Frühlingsprojekt zu setzen, dass ich schon lange im Hinterkopf hatte. Ich wollte eine Tulpe falten, eine richtige Tulpe. Das heißt, die Blüte soll aus sechs Blütenblättern bestehen, die einen inneren und einen äußeren Kreis bilden.

Die meisten Origami Tulpen haben vier Blütenblätter und der Rest wird angedeutet. Mittlerweile weiß ich auch, warum das so ist, denn bis Ende Februar hatte ich nur einen Haufen zerknülltes Papier gefaltet. Manchmal war es auch zerrissenes Papier.

Ich besann mich also auf meine eigene Regel: Wenn Du einfach nicht mehr weiter kommst, dann mach erstmal was anderes. Gesagt, getan, ich habe eine Kirschblüte hervorgekramt, die ich vergangenes Frühjahr entwickelt hatte. Bei näherem Hinschauen erinnerte mich die Rückseite des Modells an Kleeblätter. So war ein neues Projekt geboren, das wesentlich erfolgreicher verlief und pünktlich zum St. Patrick’s Day konnte ich auf Flickr meinen Kleeblattkranz präsentieren.

Zeit für einen Blogeintrag hatte ich Mitte März nicht, daher kommt der Artikel dazu nun. Anlass sind aber eigentlich nicht die Tulpe und auch nicht das Kleeblatt, sondern die vorher bereits erwähnte Kirschblüte. Eine Anleitung dazu befand sich letztes Jahr im Tagungsband von Origami Deutschland und ich dachte mir, dieses Jahr kann ich die ja pünktlich zum Fest der Kirschlüten auf meinem Blog veröffentlichen. Dieses japanische Frühlingsfest fällt in der Regel auf die allerletzten Märztage, bis hin zu den ersten Maitagen.  Dieses Jahr hat es aber bereits begonnen, da die Temperaturen ungewöhnlich hoch waren. Auf dieser Seite kann man verfolgen, wie sich die „Kirschblütenfront“ über die japanischen Inseln bewegt.

So habe auch ich mich nun gesputet und rasch das Diagramm überarbeitet und auch wieder ein kleines Filmchen erstellt, das als zusätzliche Erklärungshilfe dienen kann. Ich hoffe Ihr habt Spaß beim Falten! Runterscrollen, da is dann das Diagramm...

Do you know the feeling, when you get completely stuck into an idea? This was me in February. Absolutely tired of winter I decided to start with a spring project that I was planning to do for a long time now. I wanted to fold a tulip, a more realistic one. This means six petals forming in inner and an outer circle.

Most of the Origami tulips have only four petals and the rest is just implied by the remaining paper. Meanwhile I know why, until the end of February I haven’t produced more than crumpled or even ripped paper.

So I reminded me of my own rule: If you are completely stuck, do something else. A word and a blow. I dug up a cherry blossom, which I’d designed last spring. Taking a closer look at the model, I thought the backside looks like the leaf of a shamrock. A new project was born, that was much more successful. Just in time for St. Patrick’s Day I presented a shamrock wreath at Flickr.

In the middle of March there was no time to write a blog post, that’s why I’m doing it now. But this post is not about the tulip neither the shamrock. It is about the cherry blossom I mentioned earlier. A diagram was published in the convention book of Origami Deutschland last year and I thought this year I could publish it on my blog when the cherry blossom festival is starting. These Japanese spring celebrations usually take place on the last days of March to the first days of May. This year it has already begun due to warm weather. On this homepage you can see the current cherry blossom forecast.

So I sped up, reedited the diagram and even made a short film, which might be some additional help. I hope you have fun folding it!
