Frohe Weihnachten! Ach so, die Anleitung ist ganz unten…

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 11px;">Another origami advent calendar comes to an end. As always, December is a very stressful time, which is made even more so by the calendar. Nevertheless, it was once again a lot of fun to delve a little deeper into a special origami theme.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 11px;">Every year I try to publish a new model, including a diagram, on Christmas Eve and this time I managed to do it again - at the last minute, so to speak. Over the last few weeks, I have been trying to create an origami model of a star that you can find in large numbers on the Internet for crafting with glue or thread. On Friday, the day before yesterday, I finally found a satisfactory version. Today, in addition to the final Christmas preparations, I drew instructions, folded models and took photos. Oh, and now I'm writing this last blog post.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 11px;">The star is called multipointed star because you can assemble it with different numbers of modules to create stars with different numbers of points. The model also offers a variety of options for variation by changing distances and angles or using a rectangle instead of a square. I already have some ideas for a variation with a colour change.<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 11px;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 11px;">I hope you enjoy folding.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 11px;">Today I have another kind of collaborative work. To fold this model, you need a heptagon. Unfortunately, the diagram by Andrew Hudson that Jared refers to is no longer available. But there are more origami artists who have worked with heptagons. On Philip Chapman Bell's blog, for example, you can find instructions for a <a href="http://origami.oschene.com/archives/2006/10/01/how-to-make-a-heptagon-from-a-circle/" style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 11px;" target="_blank">heptagon made from a circle<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 11px;">.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 11px;">It may seem a little lame, but this model fits perfectly into the pentagon angle category. In such a simple way, a pentagon is created from a strip, which in turn becomes a star. It is probably called 'Lucky Star' and the designer is not actually known. There are instructions, for example, in a convention book published by the <a href="https://www.britishorigami.org/" style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 11px;" target="_blank">British Origami Society<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 11px;"> and the <a href="https://www.origami-cdo.it/" style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 11px;" target="_blank">Italian Society<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 11px;">. In both volumes it is categorised as a traditional model. In addition, Toshikazu Kawasaki published the star in the book 'Doctor's Origami Dream Book' with the note unknown author. There are plenty of other instructions on the Internet. I am linking to one from Origami Kawaii, as <a href="https://www.paperkawaii.com/origami-lucky-stars-tutorial-easy-fun/" style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 11px;" target="_blank">there is<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 11px;"> both a drawn version and a video.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 11px;">Last weekend was an exciting experience for me. I was a special guest at the Italian Origami convention. This was a great honour and a wonderful time for me. In addition, many origami friends were present, some of whom I had last seen about five years ago. Of course, I also got to know a few new models and one of them fits perfectly into this new week and somehow doesn't either. The model is by Mélisande* and is called the 'impossible star' because the angles are not actually sufficient to allow a star with five points. However, the flexibility of the paper makes it work.

A 60° grid was the for an acorn.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 11px;">Perhaps something general about tessellations. You start such a model by folding a grid into the paper. In Ilan Garibi's 'Cubes' it was folded lines with 90° angles. In yesterday's and today's model, there are lines with 60° angles and the result is a grid of many equilateral triangles. This grid is ideal for folding stars.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 11px;">Today's model is called 'negative space stars' and comes from the book 'Origami Tessellations' by Eric Gjerde. This was my very first book with instructions for tessellations and in my opinion is still one of the best introductions to the subject.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 11px;">Today's model is an even better example of a joint project. It is a tessellation that I received as a gift from Robin Scholz many years ago. This is a so-called flagstone tessellation. This means the folded patterns are created by directly adjoining surfaces, similar to a paved stone floor. This was the first time Robin had folded such a tessellation. He had learnt about them in an exchange with Peter Keller, who in turn knew them from Joel Cooper. There are even photo instructions for it.

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">For today's version, Robin then moved away from the strictly flat pattern and pushed the central hexagons into stars. This technique in turn came from Ralf Konrad, another passionate tessellation folder.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 11px;">This is a kind of joint project.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 11px;">It's time for a new set of angles - 60° and 30°. I can't explain exactly why, but I like these angles the most. They open up the world of hexagons and equiliteral triangles. I'm starting this set with Francis Ow. During his lifetime he made a large collection of diagrams available on his homepage. Including a six-pointed star, which offers many possibilities for beautiful small variations.

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">Zur Anleitung scrollt nach unten.

Last year I developed a variation that forms a pendant or bowl with six compartments. What is much more important, however, is that with this model I am attempting a form of instruction that is new to me. It is a drawn animation intended to combine elements of a diagram and elements of a video tutorial. I created the instructions with the help of the new app Procreate Dreams and I'm definitely still far from getting an error-free result. Here you can see my first baby steps into a form of instruction that is new to me.

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">Since the app has only been released two weeks ago, I haven't managed to animate all the steps yet. So consider this a work in progress. The first steps are animated, the next ones are drawn and the rest is at least filmed. If everything goes well, I will replace the steps with animations bit by bit.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 11px;">Week 1 - 90° and 45°

This model has also inspired many origami artists to create wonderful variations. For example, a ring shape by Robin Scholz or these variations by Chantal Pixley called ‚pregnant hydrangea’. In general, the model presents a nice challenge for everyone who folds it, because you can always add another small shape in the middle of the basic shape - the only limits are the quality of the paper used and your own ability to fold small. If you would like to try it yourself, you will find a drawn diagram here and a video instruction here.

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">While the origami quilts from the last two days involve putting several individual pieces together to form a large pattern, the origami tessellation technique creates a repeating pattern from a single sheet of paper. In my opinion, one of the most suitable tessellation models for the topic of 90° angles is 'Cubes' by Ilan Garibi. This is just one of many models shown in his book 'Origami Tessellations for Everyone' (link to amazon) with detailed instructions drawn by Franziska Schwarz.

In 2020 Mélisande* developed the 'Fröbelian Quilt', in which the individual shapes are not only placed next to each other, but can be inserted into one another. This creates a very beautiful quilt. There is a whole album in Melisande's Flickr stream that lists different variations, including a crease pattern.

Kalamihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12287371474075236075noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5543497092602241751.post-62168695183500633772023-12-01T00:01:00.001+01:002023-12-01T00:01:00.138+01:00Erster Dezember!

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 11px;">Finally we‘ve reached December and it is time for another Origami Christmas Advent Calendar!

Part of his concept was folding paper. It is said, even the word Origami goes back to this, as ‚ori‘ means folding in Japanese and ‚kami‘ means paper. A specific form in Fröbels repertoire is the so calles Schönheitsform (form of beauty) - today it is also known by the name windmill base. Starting with this base you can find an almost endless number of variations and patterns and still everything comes from a combination of 90° and 45° angles.

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">By a lucky coincidence I bought the book ‚Origami for Teachers’ by Dáša Ševerová and Ilan Garibi a few weeks ago. In it there is a complete lessonplan on how to teach the Schönheitsform and its variations. The idea of the lesson is to encourage creativity. In my class it was a huge success. The kids completed the base without any problems and after that they had so much fun in folding and discovering different patterns.

There it is, the last day of the advent calendar. I hope you enjoyed folding.

The last star in the row has a real background story. Usually I just try out what I can do with a model until I have a satisfying result. With this version, however, I initially had a clear goal and had to find a way to get there.

At the last German Origami Convention, I visited a workshop by Claudigami, in which she showed us a ring by Ben Goldberger including beautiful leaves. The leaf shape keeps appearing in models and I thought that it should work with the Kalami Star too.

A first version was quickly found, but I didn't like it at all. The biggest difficulties were to align the leaves so that the indicated stem lies in the middle of the star and that no paper overlaid the leaves. After many, many attempts, I finally had a satisfying result, in which, however, both the inner and the outer location are used. With this version you can not make any combinations.

Since the folding sequences are quite difficult again, I created another video for demonstration.

Kalamihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12287371474075236075noreply@blogger.com0
